Everything I Like Causes Cancer

Where we've been convinced to write a new post on Dec. 2. Stay tuned!

"What Other People Did While I Sat on the Couch and Ate Candy"

This week we found the contestants still in Burkina Faso. At the start of this leg of the race, they had to find a marked path to a nearby village where they looked for Dakissaga, the tribal chief, who would give them their clue along with a customary gift of generosity, a chicken. We learn that they have to keep the chicken with them at all times during this leg - no chicken, no check-in! Shana and Jen actually named their chicken Phil. Hee.

They then took a taxi 100 miles to Bouda Peletanga where the Detour was "Shake Your Pan" or "Shake Your Leg." In Shake Your Pan, contestants had to pan for 1 ounce of gold. In Shake Your Booty they had to learn and perform a dance for three local celebrity judges. Nate and Jen and Ron and Christina's dances weren't good enough and they had to sit out a ten-minute penalty. It seemed to me that Shake Your Pan was easier and quicker.

Once the teams completed the detour, they then had to walk through the village to find Peletanga Market. Along the way was the first U-turn of the game. When one team chooses to U-turn another team, the U-turned team has to go back and perform the Detour activity that they did not complete. In this instance, Shana and Jennifer U-turned Jason and Lorena. Jason and Lorena had just completed the Shake Your Pan, so they had to go back and also perform Shake Your Booty.

I can't believe they did it. It's stupid to use the first U-turn - doing so makes enemies that you don't need this early in the game. I was certain that Shana mistakenly thought that TK and Rachel, who were right behind them, were Jason and Lorena. A quick check of the official site confirmed it: it scared her that J/L, a competent team, were right on her heels. Still a stupid move.

I was, however, really impressed with Jason and Lorena. They took it well - didn't even waste a second being angry or freaking out. They simply took stock of the situation, opted to remain positive, and moved forward. You never know what is happening to the other teams, so you never give up. Jason mentioned karma when interviewed about it and it pleased me to no end when Shana and Jennifer struggled at the Road Block.

Speaking of the Road Block, after stopping at the U-turn box contestants were directed to taxi to the outskirts of Ouagadougou to find the Tampouy Goat Market. On finding it, contestants also found the Road Block. In this Road Block, one member of each team had to load a bike with three African print blankets, a plant, two yellow containers, a bundle of sticks, two teapots, two hoops of twine, and a goat. They then had to ride the bike through the marketplace to a specific vendor and sell the supplies for their next clue.

The next clue pointed them back through Ouagadougou to Hotel de Ville, this week's pit stop. The contestants arrived at the pitstop in this order:

1. Azaria and Hendekea - Yamaha motor scooters (third first-place win)
2. Jennifer and Nate
3. Ron and Christina
4. Nick and Don
5. Kynt and Vyxsin
6. Shana and Jen
7. TK and Rachel

Sadly, Lorena and Jason were the last team to arrive and this leg of the race was an elimination.

Of Note:

  • I was really moved by Kynt and Vyxsin's experience in Africa. She was overcome by the contrast between the kindness of the people and their abject poverty. It was good see some depth in them.
  • The 10-minute penalty is the obvious reason Jennifer and Nate barely missed first place. And wasn't she a baby about it? I can't believe she expected Azaria and Hendekea to slow down and LET them have it. Sportsmanship, please, girly.

If this post wasn't a Contest Post, you'd see the title "Here's What Other People Did While I Sat On The Couch And Ate Candy" up there since 54% of you said that's what you want me to call the weekly Amazing Race wrap-up post. We love it when you voice your opinion here, so thanks!

On to the wrap-up . . .

From last week's pitstop in County Galway the teams flew 600 miles to Amsterdam. Once there they took a train to Amsterdam's Centraal Station. Each team then searched the canals for the Melkmeisjesbrug Bridge where they found the next clue.

The clues sent the teams to the next Detour where the choice of tasks was "Hoist It" or "Hunt It." In Hoist It the teams had to secure and raise 5 items into a second-story window. In Hunt It the teams had to search through thousands of bikes to find two particular bikes and then ride them 5 miles to the next clue. Lorena and Jason kicked butt in the Hoist It. They pretty much kicked butt the whole episode. BTW, why did TK and Rachel struggle so long when they could switch places?

Anyway, the next clue put the teams on buses to Ransdorp where they searched a marked field for the cluebox. Inside the cluebox was a Roadblock which had one member of each team pole-vaulting a swampy ditch, or ditchvaulting. Once again Lorena and Jason made it look easy. And just in case you had your head in the fridge during this scene, here's a picture of Grampy Donald in his skivvies.

Because every good show has a hairy, muddy, naked grandpa.

From the bog, the teams rode dutch cargo bikes called a bakfeits through the countryside looking for drop-off points along the way to the pitstop at the Durgerdam Yacht Club. The teams arrived at the pitstop as follows:

  1. Lorena and Jason - prize = sportbikes
  2. Nate and Jen
  3. Shana and Jennifer
  4. Kynt and Vyxsin
  5. Azaria and Hendekea
  6. TK and Rachel
  7. Marianna and Julia
  8. Nicholas and Donald
  9. Ronald and Christine

Kate and Pat, the lesbian ministers, came in last place. It was an elimination round.

Of note this week:

  • OMG Ron is such an arrogant prick. How is it that Christina isn't damaged and is, in fact, extremely patient with him? His constant blathering and criticism wears me out and I'm only exposed to a fraction of what she withstands. The worst part is that he has no clue how egotistical and mouthy he is. At one point he said that as a salesman his philosophy was to be very polite. Really? The man is del.u.sion.al.
  • New bullet, same topic: Ron. Direct quotes from him to Christina include, "I could have done better" and "You need to lose some weight." I bet her mother hopes he dies on this trip.
  • My favorite quote from the episode was after the ditchvaulting, "Man, you smell like poop." I think TK said it to Rachel but I'm not certain.

This is the weekly Amazing Race recap post, but since the poll to pick the name is still open, I opted to give it a contest post title.

The players started the race at the Playboy Mansion. They are:

  • Marianna and Julia - sisters, Miami
  • Ronald and Christina - father and daughter, Tacoma WA
  • Kynt and Vyxsin - dating goth couple, Louisville KY
  • Nicolas and Donald - 23 year-old airline pilot and his grandfather
  • Nathan and Jennifer - dating, Huntington CA
  • Azaria and Hendeak - siblings, engineers, New Orleans
  • Lorena and Jason - dating, LA
  • Kate and Pat - married lesbian ministers
  • Ari & Staella - friends and co-workers
  • TK and Rachel - newly dating hippies, southern Cal
  • Shana and Jennier - friends, LA
The first leg of the race started with a flight to Shannon, Ireland. Once there, the players took a ferry to InisMor Island where they signed up for ferries leaving the island the next morning at staggered times. The teams spent the night in a hostel and took off as scheduled for the mainland the next morning.

Back on the mainland, the teams drove 42 miles to Cloigeann Farms where they had to tandem bike on a muddy track to the next clue.

The Road Block this episode involved high wire tandem biking followed by putting peat into baskets on the backs of donkeys and then leading the donkeys back to the entrance to the farm. Once the roadblock was completed, the teams drove 13 more miles to the pit stop, Connemara Heritage Center. The teams arrived in this order:

  1. Azaria & Hendekea - PRIZE: trip for 2 to Fairmont Springs Bear Resort in Alberta, Canada
  2. Kynt & Vyxsin
  3. TK & Rachel
  4. Lorena & Jason
  5. Nicolas & Donald
  6. Shana & Jennifer
  7. Ronald & Christina
  8. Pat & Kate
  9. Marianna & Julia
  10. Nathan & Jennifer
Ari and Staella were eliminated. I love that Ari bragged about being a bigger bitch than karma but was completely KO'd by it after stealing the taxi. I anticipated that Ari would be really irritating, but like any other train wreck, I wouldn't be able to look away so I'm a little disappointed he's gone already. But there's still a lot of potential for drama and theatrics with this group. Some initial observations:

  • Grandpa Donald is going to be a huge physical liability to Nicolas.
  • If Nathan and Jennifer can't work out their trust issues, they won't go very far. I question the priorities of contestants with extreme baggage who think they can endure the additional stress of a contest like this.
  • In my mind, an Amazing Race contestant should never forget this: Don't panic. It makes your situation worse by clouding your judgment. And your salvation is probably around the next corner.
  • The donkeys being led by the uptight and screechy teams were the ones who stopped walking and refused to move.
