PSA Tuesday

Posted by Gwen |

I’m not the kind of blogger that gets asked to review products. Something about vulgar immaturity and swears. Whatever. BUT! When I find something that is more awesome than I ever imagined possible, I’m going to tell y’all about it whether they want me to or not. I’m just that kind of renegade.

My couch is covered in a fabric that likes to absorb pet hair into the weave in a way that makes vacuuming the couch little more than aerobic exercise. Over the years I’ve tried sticky tape rollers, more than one of those maddeningly ineffective electro-static brushes, and more recently resorted to brushing the entire couch with a Furminator, which is tiresome and not so good for the upholstery. At times I’ve felt that the damn couch was hoarding cat hair in an attempt to actually morph into a cat.

So over the weekend I saw a commercial for Pledge’s new
Fabric Sweeper for Pet Hair and decided that since I’d purchased every other pet hair remover on the planet and been woefully disappointed, I might as well try this one. What’s another $3 in the grand scheme of things, right?

The freaking thing works, people. IT WORKS. It took very little time to do the whole couch and picked up every tiny little bit of the hair without making me sweat and curse. Try it. I promise you’ll be impressed. You may even stop fantasizing about your pets passing into the Great Beyond just so they’ll stop shedding on all your stuff.

I want someone to invent a toilet with a scale in it that will weigh my poo before I flush and send it out to sea.

It would also be sweet if it was programmed to play song clips related to the weight of your submission. For example, let's say you dropped off ten pounds of kids at the pool (I blame the Mexican food) . . . the digital scale would register a whopping ten pounds and then the built-in iPod would play a short clip from Rod Stewart's Young Turks, "Patti gave birth to a ten pound baby boy, yeah!"

That would be awesome.

601: All You, All Day

Posted by Gwen |

For ease of navigation here's a running list (with commentary) of your EILCC 600-Post Show and Tell Extravaganza posts:

Tags Times Two from Skyler's Dad, the sweetest man in Blogaritaville and author of Some Days It's Not Worth Chewing Through The Leather Straps. Finding friends like this man is the greatest perk of blogging. Thanks, SD, for celebrating with me!

In a Sentimental Mood by The Lady Who Doesn't Lunch. I adore this woman. A-DORE. She is classy and funny and I want to sit with her by a pool, wearing big straw hats and reading trashy magazines while handsome men silently bring us mai-tais and fan us.

Scope-Tech: Gwen's Show and Tell Part I
I love it when you give this man a task; he always gives more than you requested.

Love Letters by Cora: Because Gwen Asked Me To
I thought about keeping Scope and Cora separated in this list but realized one of them would likely hack in here and rearrange things if I did, so I let them be. No monkey business over here, you two. EILCC has a low PDA threshold.)

mjenks, A Crown of Thistles: Stuff
Apologies to jenks, the man with whom I can be as un-PC as I want and he still thinks it's funny . . . I noticed early yesterday that some verbiage in this post was confusing and led jenks to believe that I was asking for pictures of your own pajama tops, so I re-worked one phrase but failed to mention the distinction to him. I'm sure he won't mind, he is the kind of guy who likes to do his own thing anyway. Also, when you read his post, pretend that all that really nice stuff he says about his new friend Kristine is about me; I did.

~E Deconstructed: More Postcards and Gwen's 600th Post
I expected to find a couple shirts that belonged to ex-boyfriends when I went digging through your closets and dressers and ~E has given us our very first one. This saucy little Seattle minx loves her special shirt so much she bought others just like it and marked "the special one" with a laundry pen!

Candy's Daily Dandy: Gwennie, Your Challenge Has Opened A Pandora's Box of Emotions
Candy's post proves that a woman will do anything for a pair of shoes she loves.

Are You Sassified?: Things I Want Thursday - T.I.W.T.
It would seem Sass couldn't resist the siren song of a Wordless/Blowing Up Shit/Six Word/Totally Awkward/Whatever Thursday but she managed to work in a story about a sweatshirt that has earned BFF status. God love her.

My best girl Whiskeymarie: "Pride" and "Dignity" Are Such Ugly Words
Holy buckets! I had no idea when I wrote the phrase "that pair of jeans you finally had to make into cut-off shorts and now you can't get rid of the shorts even though your ass hangs out the bottom like a $2 hooker" that I was speaking directly to her. You should not miss the ensemble she put together from the back of her closet. Priceless.

Scope-Tech: Gwen's Show & Tell - Part II - The Scope Coat
Scope not only let me peek in his drawers but also showed me his flare. I hope Cora doesn't try to cut me.

Suze of Suzel's Sass: Because She Said So
Huh. I never knew Suze was in the Air Force. Maybe I should stop giving her so much shit and using her credit card before she kicks my ass into next Tuesday.

Fancy Schmancy: What Gwennie Wants, Gwennie Gets!
Ahhhhhhh. Comfy duds and a special stuffed friend, perfect for the end of the day. That Fance, she always knows what we need.

Cowguy: ShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirtShirt
I've waited all day for our first "my family tried to get rid of it" story. I should've known it would be Cowguy. I can't wait to meet him and his peeps because they have a lot of fun. I've been stalking the Keota website more frequently now that the weather is better. One of these days our schedules will align and then I will magically appear in the crowd at one of their shows, like a tiny angel with a seriously foul mouth. Remind me to wear white when I go.

L'ananas, Solitary In Sanity: And Like a Facebook 5 Things
Yaaaay! Our first new person! I love it. L'ananas told me she didn't even have to think twice about her item and offered up a 14 year-old, almost-crotchless pair of shorts. Excellent. (L'ananas, I love your tag-line, "It's not you, it's me.")

Girl Interrupted, For Gwen: Better Late Than Never
I was only recently introduced to Girl Interrupted but as soon as I read her story about biting jellies (Jell-O) in the grocery I knew I had found another kindred soul. I live in awe of the scope of her passive subversion and wish we had "jellies" here.

Cash Register Jockey, Soakin' Up Paycheck: The Shirt (or Jumping on the Blogging Bandwagon)
Another EILCC newbie! Welcome, CRJ, and thanks for playing along with my silly reindeer games. In this post, CRJ shows us the Iron Maiden t-shirt he bought as a teen while on vacation with his family because he thought wearing it would make him cool. Anyone who says they never did something like this is simply a big, fat liar-mouth. Can you say "parachute pants?"

J.J. in L.A., Fun things to do for Gwen
Yes! Sick humor!  Until J.J. came along our collective wardrobe was devoid of sick humor.  Sad, really.  And surprising.  It's a good thing she was batting clean-up; we needed her.

Many, many thanks to everyone who is celebrating this EILCC milestone with me. You wonderful people are the reason I keep doing this; your friendships are my reward. I love each and every one of you.

Some of you mentioned not being able to participate due to busy schedules and broken (or nonexistent) cameras. Please don't let this stop you. I never meant to make rules that would exclude anyone. If you like this idea feel free to post anytime, with or without pictures. All I really wanted was to peek into your drawers and closets to learn more about you. Just be sure to let me know in the comments here (or here) that you've posted because I don't want to miss any of your stories. I'm going to keep adding to the list above as new posts roll in today so be sure to check back often!

I was folding laundry on Sunday when I came across this pajama top that my mom gave me as part of a Victoria's Secret sleep set so long ago that I can't even remember what the bottoms looked like. This top has aged to a sickly grayish-yellow color, the ends of the sleeves are frayed, and the material is so thin now that you can almost see through it.

But I love it. I love it because my mom gave it to me. I love it because it has rubbed against and been removed by every man I have ever seriously loved. I love it because it's comfortable. It never stays in my dresser very long because it's always my first choice. Apologies to all my other pajama tops, but this one is my favorite.

I suspect everyone has at least one piece of clothing like my pajama top: that pair of shoes you can't seem to throw in the trash despite them being broken down and soleless; that ratty-ass three-quarter-sleeve tee-shirt from the 1986 AC/DC Fly on The Wall tour that is covered in paint stains the same color as your second bathroom; that pair of jeans you finally had to make into cut-off shorts and now you can't get rid of the shorts even though your ass hangs out the bottom like a $2 hooker.

So I want you to do me a favor. Tonight when you get home from work, or today while the kiddos are napping, go find your clothing/footwear/accessory equivalent of my pajama top and take a picture of the revered item. Post the picture on your own blog tomorrow and tell us the story behind it. You don't have to link back to this post because I don't get fussy about stuff like that but please do come back and leave a comment so we can find and enjoy your stories.

I know you want to participate - I can see it in your eyes - but maybe you simply can't bear the idea of missing even one installment of Wordless/Blowing Up Shit/Six Word/Totally Awkward/Whatever Thursday, so do it because I asked in my 600th post. Yes, this is my 600th post. It's the least you could do considering I've slaved over this keyboard trying to make you laugh or think or cry or get angry, or all of the above at once, 600 times since July 7, 2007. It isn't much to ask. It isn't much to ask at all, monkeys.

UPDATES!!!

9:06 PM: EILCC announces its very first 600-Post Show and Tell Extravaganza* entry from . . . drum roll, please . . . no, really, do it on your desk with your index fingers . . . c'mon! . . . bllllllllllllllllll . . .

Tags Times Two from Skyler's Dad, the sweetest man in Blogaritaville and author of Some Days It's Not Worth Chewing Through The Leather Straps. Finding friends like this man is the greatest perk of blogging. Thanks, SD, for celebrating with me!

I can't wait to see what the rest of you have in your drawers. Keep 'em coming!

*Thanks to C.B. Jones for inadvertently naming our event in his comment. I laughed, hard. Could someone please put 10 Gwen Points on the board for C.B.? Thanks. (Gwen Points are not real nor are they redeemable for anything. I just got caught up in my own narcissism and went a little crazy. But the points still have a good connotation. I didn't mean to strip them of all value in that first sentence, just any imagined tangible value because I don't have Gwen Prizes to go with them. Shit. There I go again, naming things after myself that don't even exist. I apologize; I'm out of control.)

9:17 PM: I just spotted another one! In a Sentimental Mood by The Lady Who Doesn't Lunch. I adore this woman. A-DORE. She is classy and funny and I want to sit with her by a pool, wearing big straw hats and reading trashy magazines while handsome men silently bring us mai-tais and fan us.

I love it when you give this man a task; he always gives more than you requested.

I thought about keeping these two separate on this list but realized Cora would likely hack her way in here and rearrange things if I did so I left them be. No monkey business over here, you two. EILCC has a low PDA threshold.)

Texts from Last Night

Posted by Gwen |

Inspired by my last post I think y'all went out of your way to send me material last night.  These are the texts that started arriving on my phone about 1 am and continued arriving until about 4:

  • So u r on a dating website and u get a message from a pirate.  Then u hear about gal pirate on another site.  Do u hook them up with the goal that btween them they could have 20/20 Vision if it was opposite eyes and they stood next to each other?
  • I needs assistance in how to best service the tranny quadriplegic        will the bea arthur routine be appropriate or is it too soon
  • Guys wearing camo r why i dance w my eyes closed
  • Im proud to be your weird text! :-)
I slept through all of these coming in so didn't reply last night.  Assuming you're still interested in my advice on these important matters when you finally wake up today . . . yes, I would hook up the pirates (hook? nice!) . . . and while I don't quite know what you mean by "service the tranny", I would have performed Bea Arthur for him.  It's never too soon at EILCC and she'd have been honored, I'm sure.  I hope you made good choices on your own and can't wait to hear from you - you know who you are - to get the back stories.

Earlier this week H sent me an email (and posted here) about a new website she found, www.textsfromlastnight.com, and I have to agree that this is the best new website I've seen in a while.  Their tagline is "Remember that text you sent last night?  We do."

I'm surprised I haven't seen anything I've sent on there given that I am instantly drawn to electronics once I've reached a certain BAC level/had three jack and cokes and a Magners.  I suppose it's only a matter of time since this post will alert everyone I know to its existence. *sigh*

Anyway, since it's Friday and I know you don't want to be working because I don't, I want you to pull out your phone, scroll through your texts and then put the funniest one you can find in the comments.  Keep in mind, like the site says, these are funnier if you steer clear of entire conversations, if you take things out of context.

Sadly, I just recently ran out of memory in my phone and was forced to delete everything if I ever wanted to receive another one but of the 20 that have accumulated since, this is pretty damn funny out of context:

This sounds like the beginning of a sci-fi movie.  Where you get eaten.

So, monkeys, what you got?  Make me laugh.

Go read I'm Not Benny.  He's funny and odd, just like us.  He likes bacon and dogs and he has a pin of Ronald McDonald jamming on the guitar.  I'm scheduled to fight his grandma in a cage later this week.

Fat Fat Sugar, a recipe

Posted by Gwen |

I can't remember where or how or who I learned this from but this recipe is so good you will always have to make two batches.  It's name, Fat Fat Sugar, will make sense in about three more lines:

1 package Lil Smokies (I get beef)
1 pound bacon
brown sugar

Cut the slab of bacon into three even sections, each about three inches long.  Wrap each smokey in a piece of bacon, secure it with a toothpick and place on a jelly roll pan.  Once all the smokies are wrapped, cover each one in a pinch of brown sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees until the bacon is cooked.  If need be you can crank up the temp at the end to crisp the bacon and sugar.

Like I said, always make two batches or there won't be enough.

Lookit! I made a dress! And I did it all by myself using only my pea-sized brain!

Making this slightly-lopsided and way-to-big-at-the-waist dress, a.k.a. a palette for embellishments, was no small feat and took me two days to complete. The first one I cut was way too small. I was able to get it on but had about 23,000 pins sticking into my sides. I had to take the pins out to get it off. Thankfully I had anticipated this sort of set-back and saved a big piece of the sheet.

I used the first draft to sketch the second, adding 2.5 inches to the sides for good measure, and everything was sailing along, easy peasy. I had everything sewn except one side. Then the machine broke. Within the first five stitches the whole thing locked up with a "clunk!" and I couldn't get the needle to move. I ended up using tin snips to break the needle in order to unbind everything. I put everything back to rights, according to the book, and within the next five stitches the same thing happened. I ended up bending every machine needle I had in my kit before I gave up.

According to the repair shop it was risky to sew material with a frayed edge (like a sheet) without trimming or finishing it first. It seems so obvious now. I ended up using seam tape to finish the dress because my machine may not be fixed by Saturday morning. Remind me to wear something under it in case that seam gives.

All in all, it was quite the learning experience. There's one daunting task left before I get to hot-glue the embellishments (the FUN! part) and I still haven't figured it out but I'm sure I can. I mean, c'mon! I've gotten pretty far with only these notes, jotted on the sheet before I started cutting:

PSSSSSST!!

Hey, everybody.  Candy's hosting a weekend-long Christmakwanzukka party over at her place.  You should come over.  Dr. Zibbs is there and Whiskeymarie is already dancing on the furniture!

I'm heading back over there as soon as I grab this bottle of Jack.  That's all I need.  And this box of mini tacos.  This box of mini tacos and this bottle of Jack and that's all I need.  I don't need one other thing, not one.

See you there! Bring ice.

As is evident in many of my comments, I like to make up stories so I was thrilled when Some Guy tagged me this week to participate in a story virus.  From what I've heard coming out of the CDC, the virus started when man of many blogs and interests, Splotchy, went outside in the freezing cold with wet hair.  After that, well, you know how it is here on the Internets - we hardly ever go outside, accumulating germs like Pokemon cards, and once we're sick we medicate with whiskey - so yeah, this thing spread like wildfire.

I'm not good at following instructions so I sure as hell can't regurgitate them.  Here they are as originally posted by Splotchy:
Here's what I would like to do. I want to create a story that branches out in a variety of different, unexpected ways. I don't know how realistic it is, but that's what I'm aiming for. Hopefully, at least one thread of the story can make a decent number of hops before it dies out.

If you are one of the carriers of this story virus (i.e. you have been tagged and choose to contribute to it), you will have one responsibility, in addition to contributing your own piece of the story: you will have to tag at least one person that continues your story thread. So, say you tag five people. If four people decide to not participate, it's okay, as long as the fifth one does. And if all five participate, well that's five interesting threads the story spins off into.

Not a requirement, but something your readers would appreciate: to help people trace your own particular thread of the narrative, it will be helpful if you include links to the chapters preceding yours.
- COMMENCE -

The bus was more crowded than usual. It was bitterly cold outside, and I hadn't prepared for it. I noticed that a fair number of the riders were dressed curiously. As I glanced around, I stretched my feet and kicked up against a large, heavy cardboard box laying under the seat in front of me. (Splotchy)

I hunched down to see what it was, but as I did, the bus violently veered to left. I was thrown up against a heavyset Asian woman with blond hair. I pardoned myself, but she faced forward with no reply. Just then, a man wearing a jumpsuit of silver and gold stood up at the front of the bus. He was holding a megaphone and a box of graham crackers. He held the megaphone up to his face and began to speak... (
Some Guy)

"Yukon Cornelius was the greatest prospector that ever lived!"  Waving the box of graham crackers over his head, "And the silver and gold nuggets in this box were mined by him at the North Pole!"

It was then I noticed the box under the seat was also filled with graham crackers.  Not name-brand ones made by the tree-dwelling elves, but the generic kind that come in white boxes meagerly labeled in big black letters: GRAHAM CRACKERS.  Probably made by a guy named Butch who masturbates at lunch and doesn't wash his hands.

"And I had a whole bunch more right here on this bus until one of you misfits stole it!  Gimme back my silver and gold!"

As I contemplated the man's sanity the bus stopped at a red light, throwing the woman next to me into a fit of rage.  Before I knew what was happening she had tossed me out of her way onto the floor and was lunging for the kook with the microphone.  Her wig flew across the aisle as she jumped on the man's back and sunk her toothless gums into his shoulder.  The two of them went down like a pine tree headed for a Boy Scout lot.

The driver, startled by the commotion, looked up into his overhead mirror, accidentally removing his foot from the brake, and the bus rolled into the busy intersection.

- FIN -
for now

The most effective way to keep a virus circulating is by tongue kissing someone who's infected.  With that in mind, I'd like to spread this virus to Sass, Suze, The Lady Who Doesn't Lunch, katrocket, and Mike.  Don't let me down, monkeys, I know you've got it in you to spread disease.

Have I told you lately how much I love you? Really. Each and every stinking one of you with your links to slankets and snugglies and warm jammies and your offers of hot toddies and fresh-from-the-oven grumblecakes.

I. Love. You.

Your comments warmed my heart and made me happy again - so happy that I have stopped whining and am bringing the sexy fun back to EILCC.

On my first trip around the blog block this morning I noticed that Dr. Zibbs has vowed not to comment anywhere until at least three people leave him Snapvine voice messages. For those of you who might’ve missed yesterday’s hijinx, let’s just say that a number of us discovered the wonder that is Snapvine, a widget you can add to your sidebar that allows other people to leave voicemail comments. The first message left yesterday was from Dr. Zibbs to H and I can’t stop listening to it. We all know the good doctor is “gifted” but his messages are a scream. Click here to listen, but not until you finish this post.

Shortly thereafter Dr. Zibbs left an original rap piece for me called “Ode to a Missouri Gal.” To listen, click on the “Gwen’s Voice Comments” on my Snapvine widget over there to the right. If you have never trusted me before, please do so now. You’re only shortchanging yourself if you don’t.

With that said, The Good Doctor is upset that people aren’t leaving him messages. Please help me keep him happy and leave him a message so he will come back out and play.

On my second trip around the blog block today I saw that Southern Belle has started a really fun comment game. Quoting directly from her post, to get you enticed:

"Here's how it works:

I make a wish.

The first commenter grants the wish, but gives it a negative outcome. Then they make their own wish.

The next commenter gives that wish a negative outcome and then makes
their own wish and so on...

Here's an example:
SouthernBelle: "I wish I had X-ray vision"
1st Commenter: "You have X-ray vision, but you can't turn it off so all you see are people's gross insides. I wish I was invisible" etc. etc."
Yes, she IS a creative genius. A couple rounds have already been played but it would be so much more fun if all of you crazy kooks would go over there and play. I am continually amazed by the creative energy you monkeys have and want to see your names over there, adding your special brand of spice to the game.

Go!

Hi!

Posted by Gwen |

The first order of business today is saying thank you to Sausage Mechanic and his wife (my coworker) Linda for making a place at their bountiful Thankgiving table for me.  Your family was warm and welcoming, the food was excellent, and I had a ball.  I felt like I was where I was supposed to be.  Thank you!

Second, while I wouldn't likely ever go shopping today, Black Friday, because crowds like that make me anxious and crabby, I have already spent $165.  On my stove.  My oven started working sporadically this spring and finally bit the dust in June.  I never got it fixed because I didn't need it, but with Christmas right around the corner and the baking bug in my brain, it was time.  I'm just thankful that it was only $165, thereby relieving me of having to decide whether or not to buy a new one.  I tell ya, this home-ownership business is a racket.

And finally, pish-posh to all of you who say it's too early for Christmas, because I am putting up my decorations today.  It's about 50 degrees outside which is perfect for cleaning and decorating the front porch.  If I get done by early afternoon, I'm doing my tree, too.  Shut it.  My candy-cane dreams are fragile and I don't want them broken.

Have an awesome day!  Eat turkey sammiches and have fun talking about your guests now that they're gone.

This post was originally published 11/03/08 but is still (mostly) relevant.
Don't forget to vote! Enjoy the game!

This election season has been unceasingly tedious. I've actually grown accustomed to being bombarded by it and thinking about it at all times. The theme changes - the candidates, voter registration, the debates, my love/hate relationship with Sarah Palin - you name it, I've considered it.

Today I thought about the voting process itself, things like what I should wear . . . should I take a raincoat since last time I got caught in the rain and had to pee . . . not that taking a raincoat would solve anything if I had to pee . . . should I go in the morning before work (vote, not pee) . . . should I go after work . . . yeah again vote, not pee . . . should I take a book in case the line is long . . . do they allow iPods?. . . I bet not.

This went on for a while and then my feeble mind wandered back to silly things like this image that someone sent me today, a Wal*Mart Bingo Card:

A card that rewards you for witnessing an artificial voicebox and puts the pleasure back into catching the scent of someone with unbearable body odor. (Clicking the image makes it bigger so you can see some of the other fine items you're to spot for the win.)

And then it came to me in a flash - like all my genius ideas do - why not marry the two ideas? The Wal*Mart Bingo card in polling alleys across the nation . . . it's the perfect voting accessory! All you have to do is print up your very own game card and you're all set for "good times in the votin' lines" over there at the [insert where you vote here].

I recommend you print it tonight (now) and put it over there on the table with your voter registration card. That way you won't forget to take it with you and get all mad when the line is long and you've got nothing to do but think about how you wish you'd done what I told you to do.

Also, take a pen.

I'd like to hear back about any egregious sightings. If anyone actually completes a row I might consider giving said person a prize of my choosing.
