Everything I Like Causes Cancer

Where we've been convinced to write a new post on Dec. 2. Stay tuned!

Many years ago my cousin and I got so excited about the Olympics that at the start of the Opening Ceremonies we were jumping around in her living room and singing stupid made-up songs at the top of our lungs. Before long a tune had come together and we had written ourselves an official 'Lympics Ditty. As with much of what we do, we beat that song into the ground. We sang it so many times that we eventually realized you could insert ANY WORDS AT ALL and it was still a great song.

And there you have it: the genesis of our famous (in my mind - and that's the only place that matters) BERFDAY SONG.

Some of you were lucky enough to have been born on days where many years in the future I would feel like writing a berfday blog post for you. Most of those have included the words to this uplifting tune. Many others of you have included me in your Facebook Family and on your berfday I have worked the words into my greeting. All the while, I've been promising to record it because it's better in person. (Oooh! Foreshadowing!)

So yeah, yesterday was ttmac's
berfday! berfday! and we spent the afternoon touring and tasting at a local brewery. No, not THAT ONE; THIS ONE. It was delicious educational. Our second stop was Citygarden where we entertained ourselves mightily (I'll post pictures later) and recorded this masterpiece:

So, if you've had a birthday this year, or if you plan to,
this Special Presentation Sunday Matinee is for YOU.
Because you're special and it's yer fuckin' berfday.

Fifteen years ago today, December 31, 1994, I moved to St. Louis with my college boyfriend.  I had never lived in a metropolitan area before; the biggest town I had ever lived in had a population of 20,000.  This was a huge, emotional, pivotal move for me.

Five years ago today, December 31, 2004, I moved into this house, my very first property.  Also huge, emotional, and pivotal.

Isn't that weird?  That two such red-letter days in my life both involved relocation and happened on the exact day just years apart?  Eh.  Maybe it just means I get restless about the same time every year.

Today is also day seven of my 11-day vacation.  I had hit an excellent stride with the lounging and movie watching and general sloth on Sunday but late Monday I had to get off the couch and clean myself up for The Pale Divine Reunion Show, a major event for the local music scene.  Pale Divine was a local band in the 80's who maybe should have made it big but eventually broke up.  The guitarist, Richard Fortus, went on to play with the Psychedelic Furs and currently plays with Guns-N-Roses.
Having only lived here 15 years, I never saw Pale Divine live but over the years have become a close friend of the lead singer, Michael Schaerer.  At one point he was supplementing his music income as a real estate agent and helped a boyfriend of mine buy his first house.  The show was an incredible experience for me - especially since I knew how excited Michael was to be back on stage like that and the house sold out.

And then yesterday, slightly hung over from too much fun Monday night, I had a bloody mary at lunch with the gals.  Peabody and I spent the latter half of the afternoon walking at the Zoo.  The temperate day - 62 gorgeous, sunny degrees - was perfect for seeing all the animals.  Except for the giraffes, to Peabody's dismay.

When this guy opened his eyes we saw evil and ran away.

This guy popped up out of the water unexpectedly, RIGHT THERE, less than 20 feet away.
I got so excited I stuttered.

Just so you know, we renamed hippos "aquatic running pigs" because that's what they are.  It was a good day that I topped off with an expensive steak at home with broccoli and carrots and a baked potato.  So far, necessary detoxing aside, this has been a stellar week.  And I still have four days.

Happy New Year to you, monkeys!
May you be buzzed and have another tongue in your mouth at midnight.

The walls are closing in on me!

This is not today's regularly scheduled post. There's some breaking news that I simply must share because it's so weird.

Last Sunday I got an email from someone named elle michelle unedited. The subject line read, "Blog Day 2008." I suspected it was spam but took a chance and opened it. It was an email from a sweet sweetie, this elle michelle, who featured EILCC (this blog, duh) on her site for Blog Day. She said very nice things about me and made me blush. Very nice, yes?

Well, yesterday I received a comment on Monday's post from one "redstaplernation" which read, "Well, I have nothing to compare the design to since I've never been here before, but my curiosity was piqued since you got a link from Elle Michelle on Blog Day. I could not believe there is, in fact, another blogger in St. Louis! There needs to be a bloggy community here, because my commute to Chicago is getting expensive."

Since she was keen on meeting other STL bloggers, and my some of my IRL friends are STL bloggers, I commented on her most recent post and said hi.

This morning my inbox contained an email from her. Know what? She lives in my damn neighborhood. Like, within a mile. And she can spell and punctuate and uses words like "piqued." Color me piqued, indeed. If I find out she lives on my street I'll poop in it.

::strolling off humming "It's A Small World After All . . . "::

A Very Special Houseguest

Posted by Gwen |

Internet friends, meet Fernando von Bakonstein. Fernando, meet my Internet friends. I was expecting Fernando to arrive this week but was surprised as all get-out to find him having happy hour on the front porch when I got home from work last night.

Fernando, a savvy world traveler, is visiting St. Louis for about a week. We're very excited to have him. My mom even agreed to move our Mother's Day celebration a second time so that I could dedicate myself to entertaining Fernando.

I'm dying to tell you all about what we did last night, but we have to go get ready for Kimchi Amy's graduation. (Please go congratulate her - she's worked hard and we're all very proud.)

Stay tuned!
