Everything I Like Causes Cancer

Where we've been convinced to write a new post on Dec. 2. Stay tuned!

This post was originally published 11/03/08 but is still (mostly) relevant.
Don't forget to vote! Enjoy the game!

This election season has been unceasingly tedious. I've actually grown accustomed to being bombarded by it and thinking about it at all times. The theme changes - the candidates, voter registration, the debates, my love/hate relationship with Sarah Palin - you name it, I've considered it.

Today I thought about the voting process itself, things like what I should wear . . . should I take a raincoat since last time I got caught in the rain and had to pee . . . not that taking a raincoat would solve anything if I had to pee . . . should I go in the morning before work (vote, not pee) . . . should I go after work . . . yeah again vote, not pee . . . should I take a book in case the line is long . . . do they allow iPods?. . . I bet not.

This went on for a while and then my feeble mind wandered back to silly things like this image that someone sent me today, a Wal*Mart Bingo Card:

A card that rewards you for witnessing an artificial voicebox and puts the pleasure back into catching the scent of someone with unbearable body odor. (Clicking the image makes it bigger so you can see some of the other fine items you're to spot for the win.)

And then it came to me in a flash - like all my genius ideas do - why not marry the two ideas? The Wal*Mart Bingo card in polling alleys across the nation . . . it's the perfect voting accessory! All you have to do is print up your very own game card and you're all set for "good times in the votin' lines" over there at the [insert where you vote here].

I recommend you print it tonight (now) and put it over there on the table with your voter registration card. That way you won't forget to take it with you and get all mad when the line is long and you've got nothing to do but think about how you wish you'd done what I told you to do.

Also, take a pen.

I'd like to hear back about any egregious sightings. If anyone actually completes a row I might consider giving said person a prize of my choosing.

Remember that prom picture of me that I told you I submitted to Promtacular!? You know, the one you demanded to see immediately but I made you wait until it was published?

Go! Go make fun!

Snowy Drinky

Posted by Gwen |

Well, we got another couple inches of snow after I went to bed last night and now I really can't get out.  There is about six inches of snow in the alley and my low-riding Spyder is just not built for trekking through that kind of snow.  I called the office about 7 am and took a vacation day.

Days like today remind me of the very best snow day I ever had in my life:  Snowy Drinky.  Yup, it was so good we named it.  It was probably 1999 or 2000.  My friends and I all lived in a small, artistic, eclectic neighborhood in town called Soulard.  Our apartments were scattered all over the neighborhood but since it covers less than a square mile we were never very far away from one another.  At any given time you could expect a knock on your door and an invitation to go for a run or an invitation to go for a drink.  You just never knew who or what would be waiting for you when you answered the door.  It was a really good time in my life and some days I miss all of us living so close in such an interesting place.

Anyway, we had gotten a ton of snow.  My office called early and said not to come in.  Damn near everything in the city closed and before I knew it my cousin and our friend Julie were also home for the day.  The three of us decided to get bundled up and walk around the neighborhood to see what was up (aka Nosy Parker Patrol).  We walked up to the little grocery store in the 'hood and bought a 12-pack and cruised on foot.  We made snow angels and helped people push cars that had gotten stuck.  At one point we decided we needed bloody marys so abandoned the 12-pack in a snow bank and went into a favorite watering hole for a couple hours.  If my recollection is accurate, other people joined us as the day went on.

We had a ball that day.  As we took on additional responsibilities over time - better jobs, husbands, wives, real estate - most of us moved away from Soulard and are now even more scattered so the possibility of another Snowy Drinky happening is slim but is sure was fun while it lasted.

Alright, I've been called out.  My friend John, who bore witness to and participated in Saturday's overindulgence, left this comment on my Facebook page today: As much as I would like a slap on the ass, I'm a little disappointed in you! No commentary on your world-class bender on your blog?? The public deserves to know. :)

I take pride in operating transparently here.  I would love to tell you all about it.  But the funny thing about a World Class Bender is that you are supposed to forget parts - if not all - of what you did and what happened.  If we didn't forget, people would never go on them.  Duh.

That said, he's right, I should tell you what I do remember:

11:30 AM:  I arrive at Curtain Skirt and order a Bloody Mary.  I eat one small cracker with some cheese.

12:15 - 12:30 PM:  I order my first highball of the day.

2:30 PM:  John, who came to town to visit a very lovely girl, arrives at Curtain Skirt with said girl.  Let's call her Becky because that's her name.  Introductions are made and we all have one more drink "for the ditch."  (It's a joke; we did not drive drunk.)

3 PM:  The Curtain Skirt gals leave to go home, change into sweats, eat pizza and watch movies.  John and Becky and I go to another bar/restaurant.  I was at a crossroads here but didn't think twice about turning my back on You'll Feel So Much Better Tomorrow Lane and skipping down the road to Twisted Town.  Well, I skipped until I fell down anyway, but that came much later.  I think.

Thereafter:  Ask John and Becky.  I know what we did but specifics are fuzzy.  When I called John on Sunday afternoon to see if I needed to apologize he told me that I did actually order food at the restaurant but didn't eat it because I was too busy chatting up the person at the table next to us.  I've deduced that person gave me this which I found in my purse on Sunday:

8:35 PM:  Drunk dialed Johnny B.   A vague recollection of this was confirmed by checking the dialed calls on my phone.  I have to say:  just one drunk dial?  And to him?  At 8:30?  Pfffft!  Whatevs.  Not offensive.  Moving on.

Sometime after that:  I went to bed.  John and Becky were still here waiting for the cab to pick them up to take them back to her house but I was again at a crossroads:  lay down on the floor or excuse myself and go upstairs.  I chose wisely this time.  I remember turning out all the lights as they sat there but John told me later that I said it was "to aid with their making out."  So considerate, I am.

As with any big day/night out like that, I misplaced a few things - my sunglasses and dignity - but I also gained a few things - a scrape/bruise combo on my left elbow, a rocks glass, my name in calligraphy on a napkin, and this story for my blog.  Totally worth it.

Special thanks go out to John and Becky for fueling and surviving WCB 2009, to Mel-O for teaching me what a banana bag is so I could obsess about needing one, to Peabody for bringing me soup and a biscuit on Sunday because I couldn't keep anything down, and to Leslie for feeding me a cheeseburger and taking me to get my car on Monday.  You're an excellent WCB pit crew.

Whew. That title's a doozie, much like the man who drafted it, Dr. Zibbs, who challenged me today to find a crappy gift to add to a stockpile he's building for sick people. His theory is that good things are wasted on sick people, who will, "just cough on it anyway or something" and who, in my own opinion, can't appreciate nice things because of their weakened conditions.

Being the laziest of the lucky few touched by the good Doctor to do his charity work, I peeked at what the other participants found. What? I wanted to make sure I didn't duplicate ideas. Sheesh. I already had mine, I just wanted to make sure it hadn't been done.

THE RULES, as stated by Zibbs:

1) Pick a crappy gift for the That Blue Yak Crappy Gifts For Sick People Stockpile and post it on your site.

2) Pick 5 bloggers that you think might want to open their hearts and pick a crappy gift.

4) And if you really want to get into heaven, write, "I POSTED A CRAPPY GIFT" in the comments section of this post so we can see the crappy gifts you picked.

I thought about this a lot today because it was more fun than concentrating on work. I sorted through the old, dusty corners of my brain searching for the suckiest gifts I ever received. I had one grandma who gave me a nightgown every year, which was nice, except they always had cheap lace at the neck and really tight elastic bands at the wrists. They were itchy and demonic, but certainly not crappy enough for the TBY Stockpile.

And then I found it - one year my grandpa gave all the men in my family a gift that was talked about and admired and coveted until, come spring, it proved to be the biggest, most frustrating piece of shit I've ever seen:

Oh, yes, bow to me. It was flimsy, the line always knotted up and got stuck; the only purpose this thing served was to teach me how to cuss and we all know how that fucking turned out, don't we?

I looked all over these vacuum tubes for a picture of one. I found one photo, in sev-er-al places, but it showed the new, sleek, black Popeil Pocket Fisherman and I really wanted to have a picture of the one that was solid plastic and the color of a manila envelope. My tenacity eventually paid off and I found the old commercial. Can you believe this thing even came with bait?!

I tag: McGone, Whiskeymarie, Fancy Schmancy, Suze, H. I cannot wait to see what these monkeys add to the stockpile.

A couple days ago Fancy was talking about her collection of Christmas ornaments and lamenting having to pass them down to her son. She said, "When he's 21, he's probably going to be living with a bunch of guys who's idea of decorating a tree is throwing empty beer cans at it. Believe me, I've seen that. And you probably have, too."

I genuinely laughed out loud, because I have.  In fact, I helped make one and her comment flooded me with the memory of the dorm room on the corner of Jane Hall First stuffed with drunk undergrads reveling under Beer Can Tree.  I wish I had pictures of it, I know some were taken.  I was able to find pictures of the brain trust that brought us Beer Can Tree, George and Jason.

Wasn't my dorm room cool?  No?  Then look at all the beer!

These two were numbskulls.  Unreliable, maddening, funny, sexy numbskulls.  Being bad boys, I dated them both.  I dated George when I first arrived at Mac.  Well, to say we dated may be revisionist but go with me, I have a reputation to manufacture.  George wasn't a student, but he had been, and for some reason he was back in town, mostly hanging out with us on campus.

And then one day he was gone.  Though there were rumors he was living in New York, I was never sure.

And then one day he was back and this time he had a friend with him, Jason.  I fell in love with Jason on sight.  These two were fucking Frick and Frack, I tell ya.  We got in so much more trouble with these two around.  Again, not enrolled in classes but essentially base-camped in our rooms.  They came and went with no warning or explanation and one blustery frigid night in December, a night much like tonight, they showed up outside the dorm dragging a live Christmas tree across the lawn and regaling us, between howls of laughter, with a tale of near-death at the hands and shotgun barrel of the angry farmer who formerly owned the tree.

See what I mean?  Lovable dirtleg numbskulls.

The tree was huge and barely fit in Vance's room.  I don't know how we got it in there, and there was very little room for us once we did, but there was much rejoicing and Christmas cheer.  Someone put in a Christmas tape and we had ourselves a first-rate Christmas party, finals be damned.

We were practically required to decorate the tree with empty beer cans as there was only enough money for beer.  Back then you could get a case of Keystone Light for $6 so it was our obvious drink of choice.  Mmm-mm, bottled beer taste in a can.  Anyway, in less time than it takes Santa to press his index finger to the side of his nose and whoosh up the chimney, we had our first Beer Can Tree.

As redneck as the whole affair sounds and probably was, it makes me misty and nostalgic.  Those years were tough - I was on my own and paying for school and working 2-3 jobs - but they were the years and the people that made me who I am today.  We were rotten and loud and did some crazy shit, much of it illegal, but I learned spontaneity and how to not take myself so damn seriously and how to love and so much more, like how to get rid of crabs.  I'm kidding.  I swear I never had crabs.

This story ends as you would expect it to, we were all written up the next day for open alcohol violations even though the only alcohol left in the room was backwash.  C'est la vie.

Soon after I started my life anew and moved into this house, I "joined" e-Harmony. It was a time in my life when I was doing some serious navel-gazing and I wanted to know what the free personality profile had to say about me. That's how they getcha.

I didn't opt to purchase the service which meant that I could see the profiles of the people interested in me but I couldn't respond to any of their questions until I paid the fee. I will admit that I religiously checked my account. It was a Pandora's box. Doesn't everyone want to know what kind of people like them?

Anyway, one day I was contacted by someone whose profile was interesting enough that I considered paying the fee. Except that I really had just started my life completely over and my new dogma just simply had to be about short-term sacrifices if I were to have any hope of long-term gains.

Buuut . . . I am not one to let something as inconsequential as The Rules get in my way. I tried to beat the man. In one of the sections where the response is typed into a box, I spelled out my email address . . . you know like: guenosdias at prodigy dot net. I figured that way their big fancy computer technologies wouldn't recognize it.

I was wrong. And probably a little naive. I can barely write this without giggling.

Well, shortly after so-smartly amending my profile, Cousin T and I drove up to Chicago to visit our friend Holly who had just had her first baby. While we were having coffee Saturday morning I hopped on the Internet to check my email. One of which was from e-Harmony. The email informed me that my membership had been released because of the cheating.

There are few women who are as funny as the three women I was with that weekend. I could not have been in better company to break the news. My face still hurts thinking about how hard we laughed at me.

Today I tasked myself with creating a montage of pictures celebrating my upcoming 15-year MacMurray reunion. Every photo I had ever developed since the days of my first camera had been thrown randomly into a plastic tub stored in the basement so the first order of business was sorting all of them. Which, well, you can see.

The product of this labor of love is the wickedly awesome flickr badge at the top of my sidebar. DO NOT show up Saturday without having spent some time with these pictures. I had a ball laughing at the rolled jeans and loafers, the HUGE hair, all the different colors and styles my hair has been, those damn Sally Jesse Rafael glasses, and the just.damn.good. times we've had over the years. You guys crack me up. Every last one of you.

I spent quite a bit of time with these pictures between the sorting and the scanning and the uploading and the sorting again. By the end I had a hunch. A final, closer review revealed that, despite the publication of photographs that span the many years between 1989 and 2007, a distinct majority of the fifty photos include an adult beverage, an adult beverage sign, or depict us on our way out for adult beverages. Shocking.

C'mon! Skip the light Mac-tastic with me. Go double-click* on it.

Octobers Past

Posted by Gwen |

If you look over way up there to on the left you will see I've added a new Page Element. It's a flickr flash badge. Running inside there are pictures from events that occurred in past Octobers . . . there are shots from the Bar of the Month I hosted, pictures from Homecoming, pictures from Columbus Day celebrations at the Jandyfer's, and the pictures I took at Gina and Paul's reception.

To view these in a slideshow, or to order prints, doubleclick on the badge and you will be taken to my flickr site. Once you are there you will only see one photo but to the right of it will be, "Octobers Past Set." Click on that and you will see the entire set as thumbnails. "View as Slideshow" will be on the right side of the page.

Assuming as many fun things happen in other months as they do in October, I plan for this to be a regular feature. Because who doesn't love to reminisce? Come skip down memory lane with me! We can hold hands.
